Yard Sales…There’s an App for That

Yard sale season is here!

The weather has warmed up finally which means yard sales are popping up all over!  Are you celebrating like I am?  Well you should be.  🙂

And, “there’s an App for that!”    Garage Sale Rover.

Tired of scouring Craigslist, the newspaper, or just driving around aimlessly, looking for the sales?  Garage Sale Rover will do all that for you (well, not the driving), plus some other awesome stuff.

There is a free version of the App, that includes GPS mapped sale locations and driving directions.  Look at all the sales today!  The red are all yard sales and the blue are estate sales or auctions.

You can also purchase the upgrade version for $3.99, which I did, and be able to search for certain items.  For example, if you are looking for a dresser, just type “dresser” in the search box and all the sales that include dressers will come up as green on your map.  Then you can have the Rover map out the best driving route for you to all your saved sales.  How cool is that?

When you click on each little colored sign, this is what pops up. You can Save, pull up a street view map, or go to the original article on Craigslist or the newspaper with the “i” icon.

When you click on the “i” on each tag, it will take you to the full ad on Craigslist or newspaper site so you can read all they have listed.  As you can see from here, you can get directions and even email this to yourself or someone else.

Once you save all the sales you want to go to, the app will map out the best route for you to take.

Just click on the Saved Sales.

Then Optimize Route.

And the Rover puts them in order for you.  You can also change the order yourself by clicking on the up and down arrows.  Pretty nifty, huh?

I started using this App last year and just upgraded it.  LOVE it!  Next time you are going yard saling, give it a try.  The App is available for iPhone (and now tablets) and Android.

Now get out there and find some treasures!

***This is not a sponsored post.  Garage Sale Rover is just something I use and wanted to share with my readers.

A Goodwill Dresser Lives Again

Would you have given this dresser a second look if you were browsing through your local Goodwill?

You probably first notice all the scratches, discoloring, water stains where I notice its solid wood, drawers all work nicely, nothing broken.

I basically ran over and ripped the ticket right off, especially when I saw it was only $20.  SOLD!

This was going to work perfectly in my living room to act as a media console, as I sold my china cabinet turned media cabinet when I moved.  I loved it, but it wasn’t going to work in the new place.  This dresser was perfect.

Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint to the rescue.  I debated over colors…Old White, Duck Egg, Louis Blue.  Then I realized I wanted a little color in the living room.  It was pretty much all shades of white, which I love.  But it needed just a little color.  I decided to make a custom mix of Duck Egg and Louis Blue, toning down the green in the Duck Egg just a little.

So, I grabbed my trusty Purdy paint brush (love this brush) and a red Solo cup of Louis Duck (as I have named it) and went to town.  I was planning on distressing pretty heavily, so I only did one coat and it covered beautifully. Did you hear the “Red Solo cup! I fill you up!” song in your head just now? It was in my head the whole time I was painting.  🙂

Then when it was all dry (about 10 minutes later – love this paint) went to town with my sanding block (fine grit) and sanded away making the finish as smooth as a baby’s bottom.  Then brushed on the clear soft wax and buffed.  Put the hardware back on and she was finished in under an hour and a half.  Again…love this paint.

Here she is in all her glory.  Love the little bit of color it gives the room.

One more money shot.

So, when you see that piece of furniture that’s all beat up and sad with an awesome price tag…scoop it up, bring it home and give it just a little love.  You won’t be sorry.

I Love Thrifting 2012 is Coming!

Recent Thrifty Finds

I have found some really great things lately at yard sales, thrift stores and auctions that I haven’t shared with y’all.  I know…I know…bad blogger.

So, I’m going to do a little catch up with ya.

First, this little scale.  It’s vintage and cute and I’ve been looking for one for a while.  Picked it up at a yard sale for a $2.

Two pillow shams at another yard sale that were perfect for some down pillow inserts I got last month at the Rescue Mission store.  Also perfect for my new daybed in the living room.  Oh yeah…another share I need to catch up on. Thanks for reminding me.

A few more white pitchers to add to the collection. There’s a hint at some of my Fall decorating too.

Wedgewood plates and tea cups.  Goodwill 25 cents each!

Two crystal lamps at an auction. (Did you see the green sofa I got at auction? It’s fabulous and still available!)

And this old speckle-ware (that’s what they said it was) kettle from the auction too.

Some fun things, don’t ya think?

What’s your favorite thing you have found lately?

Cool Find and a Sneak Peak

Lookie what I found…

I love these old desk chairs.  It’s got great swivel and is in beautiful condition.  I won’t be painting this.  Just a quick polishing with some Old English on a few scratches and he will be ready for the shop. About time I put something new in.

This past weekend I shared on Twitter and Facebook something I’m working on. (Be sure to follow me there for all kinds of fun extra stuff.)  My living room sofa has had it.  It was a sofa bed and was starting to sink in the middle and you could feel the metal below if you sat too long.  I couldn’t stand it another minute.

I had been thinking of making a day bed for the living room since I don’t have a guest room so I finally started it using an old twin bed frame.  It’s up, but I’m going to paint it this weekend and add a little detail.  It’s soooo much more comfy and so far has only cost me $15 for a new to me twin camper mattress (thick foam mattress).

Here’s a sneak peak.

Stay tuned for the final reveal and a few secrets.

So, what are you working on this week?

Under $5 Project

You guys know I’m all about projects on the cheap.   From a new light fixture for $5 to a bathroom makeover for $25.  It’s fun to me (maybe I’m just weird like that) to see how little I can spend on a project.  Or, maybe its that I’m half broke all the time and I do what I gotta do to get what I want.  🙂

So, here’s another really quick and very inexpensive project for ya.

I picked up a tray at the Goodwill a while back for $1.95 that still had the Steinmart tag on it for $29.95!  Bargain!  But, the style of it didn’t really go with mine and is a little out.  But, no worries about that, right?

So, as I was painting my lamp shades, I also grabbed this tray up and painted the wood the same Annie Sloan’s Duck Egg blue. I forgot to take a picture of the tray at this point by itself, but, see it in the background there?  (I know…bad blogger.)

I picked up an awesome paper pad (K & Company’s Life Journey) at Michael’s a few weeks ago (with a coupon of course) that had this awesome map paper in it.  And wouldn’t you know, the bottom of the tray was exactly 12×12 so the paper fit exactly!  That just doesn’t happen in my world.  It was fate.

So, with a little Mod Podge, I glued the paper down and then put a coat over the top and done!

Another project for under $5.  Love it!

The My Memories giveaway has been extended until September 12.  Get over there and enter!!  Also check out the coupon code on my sidebar to use at any time for $10 off the software and $10 off a MyMemories.com store purchase.

Weekend Loot

Happy Monday everybody!  Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

I don’t know about you, but I’m so ready for Fall to get here. (But, Winter…you just stay far far away, k?)  This heat and humidity has been horrible.  Having to work in the basement which is already damp and yucky is no fun with it being so humid.  I’m sure its not hurting anything with me sweating that much though.  🙂

I didn’t go to yard sales this weekend, sadness.  I’ve become so addicted.  All day Saturday, I felt like I was missing out on some great stuff.  But, I really needed to get some housework done.  It’s been neglected lately and I couldn’t take it another minute.

But, I did hit a few of the thrift stores here and there as I was running some errands and found just a few things.

Loved this print…$2.95 at Goodwill.

What is it with me and these small white lamps lately?  These were just too cute to pass up.  Cute little green glass cloches and a silver engraved trophy cup that I thought was kinda cool.  Need to clean it up a little.

And, last, but not least, this great mirror. It’s really heavy and has a little big of aging on the mirror.  Love the frame.  Another Goodwill bargain.

So, did you find anything good this weekend?  Did you use any of my Thrift Shopping Tips?

Anybody go to the World’s Longest Yard Sale?  I am definitely going next year – mark you calendar for the 1st Thursday in August 2012.  Would be a fun group trip!

Thrift Shopping Tips #5

Ok, we are back to our Thrift Shopping Tip Series this week.  I’ve got one more for you today.

Tip #5 – Shop with Cash

We are all trying to save money these days and by shopping thrift stores we are able to get what we need by spending less.

When I go thrift shopping I only bring cash in with me so that I will stay on budget.  I know exactly how much I can spend that day and I am less tempted to just fill my cart with stuff just because each item was 50 cents rather than only picking items that I know I will use either for myself or for my business.  When the cash is gone, it’s time to go home.

Yep, that’s it.  A short and sweet one.

Tip #1 – Have a Plan
Tip #2 – Keep an Open Mind
Tip #3 – Think Ahead
Tip #4 – Go Often
